by BerNs

Few bands have been this influential in recent years. While some of us are still hopping that they will come together again somehow, James Murphy and his project LCD Soundsystem left the stage for the last time on april 2nd, 2011 on what some have considered one of the greatest losses of the decade in the music scene.

Despite the sadness, they left a legacy behind with their unique and fresh music leaving 3 critically acclaimed albums and millions of fans all over the world. On February 8, 2011, the band announced on its website “We are retiring from the game. Gettin’ out. Movin’ on.” and that they would be playing their last show ever on April 2 at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Shortly after the show became instantly sold-out.

This documentary, directed by Dylan Southern and Will Lovelace, picks up the feel and energy of this 4-hour epic last show and tries to retrieve a more intimate portrait of James, providing us with clear evidence of the legacy of this band!

Here is the trailer released today and bellow the official synopsis:

“On April 2nd 2011, LCD Soundsystem played its final show at Madison Square Garden. LCD frontman James Murphy had made the conscious decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of its popularity, ensuring that the band would go out on top with the biggest and most ambitious concert of its career. The instantly sold out, near four-hour extravaganza did just that, moving the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief, with NEW YORK magazine calling the event “a marvel of pure craft” and TIME magazine lamenting “we may never dance again.” SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS is both a narrative film documenting this once in a life time performance and an intimate portrait of James Murphy as he navigates the lead-up to the show, the day after, and the personal and professional ramifications of his decision.”
